  • KYOCERA
  • SHARP
  • TOSHIBA
  • RICOH
  • CANON
  • KONICA
  • OLIVETTI

We are in the process of building up the product offering per brand, but we already have a comprehensive list of toners in stock at extremely competitive price points.

New Mailroom Division in Cape Town

by Wayne Melleon 28 November 2018in General No comment

On the 18th of June 2018, Maynards took over the business of Mail & Mechanisation’s Cape Town branch. Maynards new Mailroom Division acts as the Western Cape distributor for Hasler Business Machines and Mail & Mechanisation (sister companies that operate out of Johanessburg). We now have access to the following additions to our product range:

  • Franking Machines (NEOPOST)
  • Plastic Wrapping Machines (KERN & BUHRS)
  • Pressure Sealing / Glue Folding Machines
  • Letter Opening Machines
  • Address Printing Systems
  • Card Making and Printing Solutions

Steven De Kock has joined us in a technical role ,with the responsibility for servicing the existing base of customers mainly using NEOPOST Franking Machines, and for the maintenance of the large KERN plastic wrapping machine used by Western Cape Education.

Richard Burton (Director) – had the following to say about the new division:

The acquisition of over 100 new customers has offered us the opportunity to promote our other brands (Olympus Digital Recorders, Olivetti Photocopiers and Ideal Paper Cutters) to these new customers. It has also presented our workshop with the opportunity to pick up more service and repair work. From both a sales and technical point of view, the addition of the Mailroom Division has been a very positive development at Maynards in Cape Town.

Rentals – How tied in are you?

by Wayne Melleon 25 January 2018in Copiers, General, Olivetti, Printers No comment

Rentals – How tied in are you?

We at Olivetti Imports, often work very hard at presenting a deal, explaining the pro’s and cons of various options, do test prints, convince junior staff and then senior staff of potential clients to show them how much they can save by procuring our latest Olivetti technology or product .… all the while knowing that they have an existing rental agreement with another brand.

Does this stop us?  NO.  Should it stop you?  NO.

Either it will slow us down – in other words if a device can only be upgraded in 3 years’ time, we can make a few calculations and work out when is a good time to do the upgrade to the new Olivetti – in other words; at what point in time does it become feasible to save money by doing the upgrade and also get better service from a company like Olivetti Imports?  Then wait until that time to re-invest our time in the process.

OR

We will work out that there is a short enough time and value left on the existing agreement to buy out the contract.  This sometimes can be a little complicated as companies often give skewed settlements.  Our recommendation – when asking for your settlement on your existing product – ask for a BREAKDOWN – how did they get to that figure?  Usually we offer guidance here and have managed to save our clients a good percentage off the settlement by helping the client stay informed.

Example if the rental is R1000 per month and eight months remain then the settlement is R8000 – right?  Sometimes a nominal fee for service may be included or be separate.  The only part of that fee that can possibly be accepted is the basic service fee.  Some companies build in way too many copies into that basic service fee to make it “basic”.    I would say the only fair way of doing this is the rental multiplied by how much time is left and possibly a small amount for service, like R100-R200 per month is possibly acceptable as that’s almost like a “contract fee”.  Telling the client that they usually do 5000 copies so therefore must carry on paying for that until the end of the contract, is just not acceptable.  We recommend arguing this as it means you are paying for toners and parts too, that you will never use and not just a basic contract fee.

If you are ever stuck with trying to work out what a fair settlement should be, please feel free to contact us!

In an ever changing economic climate, rental application approvals become more and more difficult but there are usually options that can help with this.  Eg, supplying all the paperwork in at the beginning, like ID’s of directors, company registration documents and so on are very helpful.  Sometimes depending on the size of the company, directors may or may not be asked to sign surety.

Sometimes, even with all this hard work, it’s not always guaranteed that a rental will be approved.  Although it’s just a rental to some, the actual process it represents explains this.

  1. In the case of a settlement – the rental house is financing money – no asset that can be retained in cases of risk.
  2. The actual device you rent comes at a cost to the company selling it – they sell it to the rental house, the rental house then takes a number of years to recoup the cost of laying out the money to pay for the device. Once the equipment is out the box and on your floor, it’s like driving a new car off a showroom floor.  It loses retail value and if the client reneges on the contract, there is a loss to the finance house, even if the equipment is collected, it’s lost a percentage of it’s original value.

Hopefully this explanation of settlements when renting equipment has been helpful.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us for further advice on how we at Olivetti Imports can help you save and upgrade comfortably.

CHANGES AT MAYNARDS HOUSE IN CAPE TOWN

by Wayne Melleon 30 October 2017in General No comment

Moving our Ground Floor Showroom to loftier heights and revamping our First floor.

Letting of the Ground Floor Retail Space to “Sport n Surf” from November 2017

There comes a time when change is inevitable. People no longer window shop for Office Automation (and many other products these days). By moving our Maynards Office Technology Showroom up to our Fifth floor, we have freed up the fantastic retail space that our building offers at street level in the CBD (on the “Tourist Corridor”).

Sport n Surf (previously located in Long Street) will be opening their doors downstairs (at 78 Loop Street) early in November, offering their trendy surf wear and surf accessories. They will be partnering with our neighbours “The House of Machines” to offer great coffee and other delectables out on the Shortmarket Street side walk, ala Paris style.

The good news is that after 95 years of servicing the office product needs of businesses in Cape Town, and throughout South Africa, we are still here – Leading the way.

The Maynards Group has relocated its Reception to the First floor of Maynards House. This may be accessed through the entrance at 80 Shortmarket Street in Cape Town. Stationery orders may be collected and machines brought into our Workshop for repair may be handed in, at our Reception on the First floor.

We continue to import and distribute the Olivetti, Olympus and Ideal brands which Maynards Office Technology endorses with unrivalled service and support.

We would welcome clients and prospective clients to visit us, and to view our fabulous range of Office Automation products. Product Demonstrations may be arranged in our Fifth floor showroom.

Olympus Audio Conference 2016

by Wayne Melleon 9 September 2016in Digital Voice Recorders, General, Olympus, Uncategorized No comment

A couple of months ago the Olympus Audio team got together for our annual conference. Traditionally this has been held in Cape Town with our direct sales teams from across the country attending. This year we felt we needed to do something a little different – so we held a client appreciation conference over 3 days in JHB. The first day was an internal conference with our JHB team – a massive thanks to both Ian and Lee from Olympus UK who begrudgingly came out to sunny South Africa  to share their valuable insights on the brand and products with us. 🙂

The second day we hosted a dealer appreciation event. The idea was to say thank you to our valued dealer partners for their continued support of the brand. The brief for the day – FUN – so we decided an afternoon of Go-Karting was the way to go!!

Compu-Kart in Edenvale was the host of our afternoon event – what a great venue with very knowledgeable and friendly staff, definitely a venue we would highly recommend and frequent again in the future. We had the use of the full facility for 3 hours and with the rather small amount of people that ended up attending that meant ALOT of “cart” time for each person. As one can imagine, there was plenty banter and lots of fun had by those that attended. For those valued partners that unfortunately couldn’t make it – you certainly missed out 🙂 🙂  BUT we hope to see you all at one of our events in the future. 🙂

A couple pictures to bring back some memories:

Our 3 day event closed off with an end user gathering in our JHB office – users + prospective users of the Olympus brand were invited in to discuss the products, their features and how best they could be used in different industries. This proved to be a fruitful process for both the Olympus staff and our clients and its definitely something we will look at doing a little more of in the future.

A big thanks to everyone that was involved as well as those valuable partners and clients for attending – we look forward to hosting you again in the near future. 🙂

The NEW Olympus DM-7 – Operated by your voice

by Wayne Melleon 17 July 2014in Digital Voice Recorders, General, Olympus No comment

The new Olympus DM-7 has just landed in South Africa and is now available through Maynards Office Technology and our selected V.A.Rs around the country. It takes over from the out going Olympus DM-5 as the range topping meeting machine but it has so much more to offer than that.  As is the case with the DM-901 which we launched earlier this year the new DM-7 is fully integrated with WiFi and can be operated via the same Olympus Audio Controller App available via the App Store (Apple) or the Play Store (Android).

As mentioned above the DM-7 is more than just a voice recorder with WiFi capability, it comes equipped with full ASSISTIVE Aids designed to help users that are visually impaired. The assistive aids consist of Voice Command (As the name suggests, you can navigate through the device menu by simple issuing it with a voice command), Text Speech (download a text document onto the device and let it read it back to you, it will also read out the menu options on the device so you can operate it simple by touch) and Daisy Compatible (Supports Daisy Audio Book content in Daisy 2.0 / 2.02).

This makes the DM-7 an extremely versatile device, it will do a great job of recording your boardroom meetings while being remotely operated by your own smartphone (via the controller app) and then allowing you to immediately upload that recording to a DropBox account for quick and easy file sharing. Not only that, it can be fully operated by people that are visually impaired with zero loss in functionality making it a powerful tool for those who suffer with what can be an extremely debilitating disability in business.

For further details on this fantastic new Olympus recorder please contact your nearest Maynards branch.

Olympus Sales Conference – 2014

by Wayne Melleon 6 June 2014in General, Olympus 2 comments

This past week the Olympus crew from around the country got together for our annual Sales Conference. This event has now become a regular on our yearly schedule and once again it didn’t disappoint. As was the case last year we were fortunate enough to have Chris Baugh from Olympus Europe and Ian Tolley from Olympus UK attend the event. Their incite into the Olympus brand from a sales and marketing point of view is invaluable to our team and we would like to extend a massive thank you to them for flying half way around the world to be with us.

The venue for the event was Theewaterskloof Country Estate, the same venue as last year. Unfortunately the Cape Winter Weather just didn’t play its part this year which meant the vast majority of our time was spent indoors with the heater on. 🙂  From a work point of view we got through some extremely valuable sessions on Marketing, New Products and Support which i know was extremely informative for everyone that attended. In typical South African fashion we even braved the icy wind and rain to complete the braai’s on both evenings (although most of this was done by our MD Paul with the help of our European visitors who didn’t think it was that cold at all).  🙂

In all it was an extremely valuable 3 days for all that attended. We have a long list of points to action in the coming weeks to make sure what we discussed becomes a reality but that’s what makes it exciting. Thanks once again to everyone that put it together and to those that attended. Here are some pic’s to illustrate the event:

Africa Health Expo – 2014

by Wayne Melleon 5 June 2014in General, Olympus No comment

Olympus Audio SA recently exhibited at the 2014 Africa Health Exhibition at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg. Africa Health is one of the biggest medical conventions in Africa and the 2014 exhibition attracted over 450 exhibitors from 35 nations, including 17 different country pavilions from all over the world.

The Olympus Audio stand was well attended throughout the 3 exhibition days. The overall aim was to increase exposure for the Olympus Audio brand within the medical circles and we certainly feel that was extremely successful. We were able to gather a lot of information, leads as well as start up what could become some important relationships with industry leaders in the medical IT sector.

Here are some pictures of the event and our stand:

Make the most of good connections in business:

by Wayne Melleon 5 March 2014in Digital Voice Recorders, General, Olympus No comment

The Olympus DM-901 Voice Recorder with Wi-Fi

Good connections are often the cornerstone of business success. With the new Wi-Fi enabled DM-901 Linear PCM voice recorder, Olympus offers a premium business tool that not only boasts the exceptional sound quality that is a hallmark of all Olympus DM series voice recorders, but also providing effortless smartphone and tablet PC connectivity to give productivity a real boost. The Wi-Fi connection allows users to enjoy the convenience of controlling the DM-901 remotely from a smartphone, letting recordings be started and stopped from afar. It also facilitates a visual index function that lets photos made using the smartphone or tablet PC camera to be linked to the relevant section in the timeline of the voice file. These features represent a real boon for capturing and highlighting what’s important during press conferences, meetings and interviews, for example. They are easily accessed from a smartphone or tablet by using the all-new Olympus smartphone app, which may be downloaded free of charge for iPhone and Android from the respective App Stores. The app also lets recordings be downloaded from the DM-901 to a smartphone, enabling files to be instantly shared or sent to Dropbox. A high-resolution 2.0” (5.1cm) colour LCD and intuitive menu structure – including a new icon-based Home Screen – further enhance operating enjoyment and simplicity while ensuring easy access to the recorder’s host of clever, advanced features. Its state-of-the-art circuitry, high quality microphone unit and Linear PCM recording capabilities of this premium model never fail to impress.

The Olympus DM-901 will change the way you record meetings, interviews or other important events. Wi-Fi compatibility now joins the feature set of the premium Olympus DM series, which is renowned for exceptional recording quality. The wireless connection via app to a smartphone or tablet opens up a whole new dimension of voice recording. The free Olympus smartphone app is available for both iPhone and Android. Setting up couldn’t be easier: a QR code displayed on the DM-901 screen incorporates the Wi-Fi access information. This is simply scanned by the smartphone camera and ensures all users will connect and start enjoying the Wi-Fi capabilities in a flash.

Your front-row seat is always reserved: remote control via Wi-Fi
No matter if you are sitting in the front, middle or back during business meetings or conferences, the DM-901 always enables a front-row recording. Place it at the best position for capturing sound in the room, return to your seat – and remain in control via the Wi-Fi connection. The “Olympus audio controller” app lets you start and stop recording using your smartphone by hitting clear on-screen icons. Productivity is boosted as files recorded by the DM-901 can also be swiftly transferred to the smartphone and then forwarded to your office or colleagues using the phone’s internet connection.

See what you want to hear: the visual index function
The Olympus DM-901 takes its task of making your life easier seriously. Thanks to its Wi-Fi connectivity, photos made by a connected smartphone or tablet during the recording can be linked to the voice file timeline as a visual index. Besides “Photo”, other types of visual indexes can be set including “Bookmark”, “Question”, “Important” and “New Topic”. These visual prompts greatly assist during searches and for file management in general. Any number of visual indexes may be linked to each file.

Operation that’s as easy as 1, 2, 3
A new, high-resolution 2.0” (5.1 cm) colour LCD provides significantly improved viewing of the clear, well-structured menus. The unit’s Home Screen has also been completely redesigned to incorporate easy-to-recognise graphical icons. The ergonomic placement of controls, including dedicated Home Screen, Recording Scene and Volume buttons makes operation more intuitive than ever. In addition, three user-definable function buttons located directly below the LCD allow for operational customisation. And besides the 4GB built-in memory, an SD slot supports cards up to 64GB.

Harnessing the pureness of sound
The low-noise, high-sensitivity stereo microphone unit enables the capture of sound with a natural ambiance due to its 90-degree outward orientation. The openings around each microphone have now been slightly enlarged to allow the phase difference of sound from the front and rear to be captured even more faithfully. Furthermore, a special Zoom Microphone mode incorporating the latest directional control technology lets users adjust the directivity of the microphones to substantially improve recording in noisy environments – even when at a distance to the person talking. Naturally, level controls can also be manually adjusted to make the most of the dynamic range in every situation. Files are saved in either MP3 or WMA format or, for ultimate results, in 48 kHz/16bit Linear PCM format.

With its full set of features and now incorporating Wi-Fi compatibility for smartphone and tablet PC connectivity, the Olympus DM-901 takes productivity, operating ease and high quality voice recording versatility to the next level. Finished in classic black, this ergonomically designed premium voice recorder is available immediately from Maynards Office Technology.

Bowman Gilfillan Honours Dave Halvorsen

by Wayne Melleon 11 December 2013in General, Olympus No comment

Bowman Gilfillan, one of South Africa’s “top 5” law firms yesterday honored Maynards Office Technology’s Dave Halvorsen for over 25 years of exemplary service. Dave’s relationship with Bowman Gilfillan (formerly Findlay & Tait here in Cape Town) spans back to the 1980’s and over that time Dave has pioneered a rock solid relationship between the two companies based primarily on outstanding customer service.

Dave will be retiring from Maynards Office Technology on the 13th of December after 20 years of service to the company, in total over 50 years in the office technology industry. The 20 years at Maynards have certainly been extremely productive and lots of what we have in place at this point in time from an Olympus Audio S.A point of view is thanks to Dave and his hard work over the years.

We were extremely fortunate to be hosted at Bowman by Marina Takacs with whom Dave has directly dealt with for the majority of those 25 years. The hospitality, food and general banter was absolutely fantastic, we all felt extremely fortunate to have been able to share with Dave what we know was a very special and touching occasion for him. It also speaks volumes for the kind of rapport Dave has built up with his clients over the years, non more evident than with Marina and Bowman Gilfillan. Thank you Marina for the fantastic gesture towards Dave, we know its a memory that he will cherish for the rest of his life and thank you for allowing us to be part of it.

In closing we would like to wish Dave all the very best for his retirement, its certainly going to take some getting used to!! No longer will you have to open the office for the rest of us at 7.00 every morning and close it at 4.45pm. The long hours you dedicated to your job have certainly paid off, every single one of us that has worked with you over the years has taken a little bit of that fantastic work ethic and instilled it into our own working lives and we are all the better for it. We are going to miss you in the office but are sure you will be popping in to make sure we are all living up to your high standards of work in the future. 🙂 We thought these two quotes were quite apt:

Men do not quit playing cause they grow old, the grow old cause they quit playing – Oliver Wendell Holmes

The trouble with retirement is that you never get a day off – Abe Lemons

Enjoy your retirement Dave, you certainly deserve it.
